I am happy to inform the Virginia Tech community that our institution has recently submitted its Compliance Certification as part of the reaffirmation process for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC).
The reaffirmation of accreditation process has drastically changed since our last accreditation almost ten years ago. The university is now required to address 86 core, comprehensive and federal regulation statements with written narrative justifications and supporting documentation. The process consists of two major parts: (1) fulfillment of a compliance certificate and, (2) submission of a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The compliance certificate was delivered to the SACS office and external review team on Tuesday, Sept.8, 2009. The compliance certificate alone comprised over 800 pages of text and 1800 supporting documents. The QEP will be formally presented to the SACS office and external review team in early Spring, 2010.
Accreditation by the Commission on Colleges attests to Virginia Tech’s commitment to clearly defined objectives for student learning, exemplified by the programs, faculty, and resources to meet those objectives. The reaffirmation process is an intense effort that provides an opportunity for every program at the university to showcase the outstanding work they are doing in support of learning at Virginia Tech. The new accreditation standards are a positive change in that they encourage us to reflect upon the connections between our daily work and the strategic goals of the university. The reaffirmation criteria are predicated upon a commitment to integrity and quality enhancement throughout the university and we look forward to working together as we now turn our attention to the QEP and prepare for feedback from the external review committee.
